Bank of Greece
1944-1953In October of 1944 Greece was liberated from the Germans and tried to build up its economy. A "new drachma" replaced the older drachma but the inflation had again appeared. As a result in 1950 a 50.000 drachma banknote was issued. In April of 1953 drachma was depreciated against the US dollar for 50%. This move stabilized Greek economy for the next 20 years. ![]() |

These are the first postwar drachmas. They're fractional notes circulated instead of coins. One postwar drachma was equal to 50 billion older drachmas! |
