Bank of Greece

1944-1953

In October of 1944 Greece was liberated from the Germans and tried to build up its economy. A "new drachma" replaced the older drachma but the inflation had again appeared. As a result in 1950 a 50.000 drachma banknote was issued. In April of 1953 drachma was depreciated against the US dollar for 50%. This move stabilized Greek economy for the next 20 years.

These are the first postwar drachmas. They're fractional notes circulated instead of coins. One postwar drachma was equal to 50 billion older drachmas!

The first postwar issues are known as Middle East issues. They're printed in England on paper of better quality comparing with the inflation issues.
